Fossil Butte Scenic Drive Closed for Season

Kemmerer, WY– Due to recent and predicted snowfall, the Fossil Butte National Monument scenic drive is now closed for the season. It will re-open in Spring 2019 when the weather permits. The drive is gated at the Visitor Center parking lot, and at the two northern BLM entrances.

While the drive is closed to vehicle traffic, visitors are welcome and encouraged to walk, snowshoe, or cross-country ski the road or any other place in the monument. Snowmobiles, ATVs, and any other motorized vehicles are prohibited.

The Visitor Center is closed on Sundays and winter holidays, but otherwise open from 8am-4:30pm. The Historic Quarry Trail is open, but snow covered. All outside attractions are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Fossil Butte was set aside to protect diverse, abundant, and well-preserved fossils from the Eocene Epoch in the Green River Formation. It is also home to a high desert sagebrush ecosystem. The visitor center, which displays more than 300 fossils, is open Monday through Saturday from 8:00am-4:30pm. For more information about Fossil Butte, visit www.nps.gov/fobu, call 307-877-4455, or follow #FossilButteNPS on social media. There is no charge to enter the monument.
