Fossil Butte Offers Full Programming for Memorial Day Weekend

Kemmerer, WY – Fossil Butte National Monument will begin offering its full range of interpretive programming starting on Saturday, May 26, 2018 and continue through the summer. The visitor center will change its hours to 9am-6pm daily. Memorial Day Weekend kicks off the summer season for the monument, as well as many surrounding fossil quarries. Monument visitors can attend any number of ranger-guided activities, including Fossil Preparation Demonstrations, Porch Talks, and Timeline Walks around the Visitor Center front porch. Visitors can also browse more than 300 fossils on exhibit, complete a Jr. Ranger program, and hike two nature trails. The trails range from 1.5 to 2.5 miles roundtrip and are moderately strenuous.

The monument’s scenic drive is also now open through the entire monument. Scenic views and wildlife viewing opportunities are available on the drive for those with vehicles that can handle a steep gravel road. The picnic area is also open for day-use only. Grills and water will become available by July 1st.

Fossil Butte was set aside to protect diverse, abundant, and well-preserved fossils from the Eocene Epoch in the Green River Formation. It is also home to a high desert sagebrush ecosystem. The visitor center, which displays more than 300 fossils, will be open daily from 9:00am-6:00pm. For more information about Fossil Butte, visit www.nps.gov/fobu, call 307-877-4455, or follow #FossilButteNPS on social media. There is no charge to enter the monument.
