In preparation for the busy summer in Gettysburg, the staff of the Eisenhower National Historic Site and the Adams County Office for Aging invites active, older citizens to participate in the Volunteer Senior Ranger Corps. On Thursday, May 7, from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., volunteers are needed for the annual cleaning and preservation of Eisenhower's farm equipment and cars. The barns will also be spruced up by removing cobwebs, cleaning windows and sweeping floors. A light lunch will be provided courtesy of the Gettysburg Foundation. In addition to the May 7 event, the Volunteer Senior Ranger Corps currently has several projects underway. Additional volunteers are needed to interpret at the Eisenhower show barn to explain to visitors the Eisenhower cattle operation and visits by world leaders. Training, reading materials and a uniform are provided. Another project needing more volunteers is tending the Eisenhower vegetable garden. All supplies and seeds are provided and volunteer gardeners get to keep the harvest. Extra vegetables are donated to the community soup kitchen and other local social service agencies. Volunteers are also needed to help with parking for World War II Weekend in September, assist with resource management projects, and build or paint fences as needed. For more information or to volunteer for the farm equipment preservation and barn project, contact Linda Thompson at 334-9296, or 1-800-548-3240. |
