Cover image: Photographer and California native Ansel Adams (1902-1984) captured this memorable moment on film for the National Park Service in 1943 while accompanying the 273rd Field Artillery Battalion of the U.S. Army on a visit to the Wawona Tunnel Tree in Yosemite National Park. Formed in March 1943 at Camp Beale near Sacramento, the 273rd headed off to war in Europe in June 1944, where it served under the command of another California native, General George S. Patton, and played an important role in the Allied victory over Nazi Germany at the Battle of the Bulge. Adams, an avid conservationist whose love affair with Yosemite Valley began when he was a teenager, devoted his talents and time to the preservation and interpretation of Yosemite, Kings Canyon, and other special places.
