The paved road in Coronado National Memorial from the entrance sign to the end of the paved portion will be rehabilitated beginning December 7, 2009 and ending approximately March 15, 2010. Portions of the road will be reduced to one lane throughout the construction period, with the potential for up to 20 minute delays. The road in the Memorial is being repaved due to water damage from the 2006 and 2008 floods as well as normal wear and tear. There will be no construction delays on holidays or weekends.
Heavy equipment will be operating in the wash near the visitor center during the first week of the project, causing the closure of the cave and the cave trail from December 7, 2009 through December 11, 2009 for safety. A new trailhead and parking area will be established further up Montezuma Canyon Road for easier access.
