The National Park Service (NPS) is excited to announce that the Camp Nelson National Monument Visitor Center and Museum will be open 7-days a week starting on Memorial Day (Monday, May 30, 2022) through Labor Day (September 5, 2022). The building will be open 9:00 am to 5:00 pm. The grounds remain open sunrise to sunset. We are offering daily guided tours of the park's grounds starting on Friday, June 3, 2022.

The June Calendar features two special events:

Saturday, June 11th: Genealogy and Research Day (10:00 am to 2:00 pm)

Do you have an ancestor that served in the Civil War? We want to hear from you! The NPS is partnering with Jessamine County Public Library to offer research assistance related to your family history by accessing military databases and other online material. We are also scanning and digitizing records of soldiers and civilians. The Jessamine Events Mobile Team (J.E.M.) will be on site to share library resources and activities.

Saturday-Sunday, June 25th-26th: Living History Weekend (9:00 am to 4:00 pm)

The NPS, in partnership with the Camp Nelson Preservation and Education Foundation, to host a Living History Weekend. The special event will feature a variety of demonstrations, including cannon and musket firing; history presentations; children’s activities; and ranger-led tours of the grounds.

The park is located six miles south of Nicholasville along Highway 27 and directly north of the Camp Nelson National Cemetery. The US Army established Camp Nelson as a supply depot in 1863 during the Civil War. The base later became one of the country’s largest recruiting and training centers for African American men, who served in the United States Colored Troops (USCT), and also a large refugee center for enslaved people seeking emancipation.
