The NPS recorded interviews with each speaker in a brand-new series called, “Camp Conversations.” The interviews can be found on the park website under multi-media presentations.
The April calendar features 4 events, all free and open to the public.
Saturday, April 1st: Park Day (9:30 am – 12:30 pm)
Since 1996, the American Battlefield Trust (ABT) has sponsored Park Day as an annual preservation event for Civil War and Revolutionary War sites throughout the country. This year's activities include painting 8 cannon carriages, removing fences, invasive plant removal, and trash pickup.
Participants will check-in with NPS staff at the Kentucky Barn, located south of the Visitor Center on Loop 2 Road. NPS staff will be present at the Visitor Center to direct participants to the site. Volunteers should wear work clothes, sturdy shoes, and bring a pair of work gloves! All other tools will be provided. All volunteers will receive a free water bottle courtesy of the ABT! Pre-registration is highly encouraged. Please send an email to Steve Phan at tuan_phan@nps.gov
Saturday, April 15th: A Grand Salute: Artillery Demonstration (1:00 pm – 2:00 pm)
The program marks two seminal events that occurred in April 1865 at the end of the Civil War: The surrender of the Army of Northern Virginia to the Armies of the United States (April 9th) and the assassination of President Abraham Lincoln (April 14th). The War Department issued orders for every US military base and post in the country to fire an artillery salute in honor of the euphoric victory and the shocking loss of their commander-in-chief 5-days later.
Friday, April 28th: Eastern National Store Grand Opening (10:00 am – 11:00 am)
The Park Store recently opened in January 2023. To mark the momentous addition, the NPS and Eastern National (America’s National Parks) is hosting an official grand opening ceremony at the park. It will feature remarks from NPS and Eastern National staff and a ribbon cutting. Special recognition will be made to the historians and authors who have published works currently sold at the store.
Saturday, April 29th: 160th Anniversary of Camp Nelson’s Establishment (9:00 am – 4:00 pm)
The US Army officially established Camp Nelson on April 29, 1863. The NPS will commemorate the anniversary with special programs, including site visits, ranger guided tours, living history demonstrations, and children’s activities. The Full Schedule and Lineup will be released on the park’s website and social media pages in early April.
