NICHOLASVILLE, KY – Camp Nelson National Monument, partnering with the Jessamine County Sheriff’s Department, will host a National Night Out from 6 pm to 8 pm on Tuesday, August 3rd. The event is free and open to the public.

National Night Out is a national community-building campaign that promotes law enforcement and community partnerships. The event, held annually on the first Tuesday in August, enhances the relationship and trust between neighbors and law enforcement while establishing a sense of community. Furthermore, it provides an opportunity to bring police and neighbors together in a fun, relaxed setting.T

The park, normally closed on Tuesdays, will be open from noon until the conclusion of the event. Attendees can participate in hands-on activities, observe safety demonstrations, explore law enforcement and first responder equipment and vehicles. The visitor center and museum will be open, including a 17-minute film about Camp Nelson. Kids ages seven and up are invited to participate in the Jr. Ranger program and earn a Jr. Ranger Badge. There will be a living history firing demonstration of a Civil War era musket and a Ranger program offered to share more about the park’s history and about upcoming plans. Attendees should prepare for warm weather.

The park is located six miles south of Nicholasville along Highway 27 and is just north of theCamp Nelson National Cemetery. Camp Nelson was established in 1863 by the U.S. military asa large supply depot. In 1864 it became one of the largest recruitment and training centers forAfrican American men who became soldiers and also a large refugee center for formerlyenslaved people seeking Emancipation.
