Visions of Harmony: Painted Tapestries of South Florida’s Coral Reefs will open in Biscayne National Park’s Dante Fascell Visitor Center Gallery on May 17, 2019, and run daily through August 18. The paintings by the Palette Knife Artists of Miami feature interpretations of Florida’s 350-mile-long reef tract in an effort to draw attention to some of the many issues the reefs face. Toward that end, the opening reception for the exhibit (on Sunday May 19 from 2-4 pm) will feature not only an opportunity to meet the artists, but a panel discussion by some of South Florida’s leading coral reef science communicators. The panel is sponsored by the Biscayne National Park Institute. The Palette Knife Artists of Miami is a group of accomplished artists who paint exclusively with palette knives. While they come from different artistic backgrounds, different states and countries, they all call Miami home. Their varied life experiences and customs enrich their styles and form the inspiration for their work. The paintings are characterized by the thick textures achieved by the layering of paint, the richness and veracity of colors in the application of the medium and the depth of feeling each artist conveys in the strokes. This unique technique brings out the soul of every subject depicted, either abstract or realistic.
In the hands of these twelve artists, the corals take on a whole new meaning as they become transformed on canvas in rich colors, dramatic textures, and abstract forms. “We hope these paintings serve to highlight and make a difference in the way people view coral reefs, thereby joining us in our efforts to protect them,” says MaiYap, the group’s founder. “Our ‘Vision of Harmony’ emphasizes the delicate balance of nature, playing such a vital role in all their survival. Society must do whatever necessary to preserve our reefs for future generations.”
Visions of Harmony is part of the park’s Community Artists Program, started in 1997 as an outlet for artists who are inspired by the beauty of Biscayne National Park. The gallery has featured photography, paintings and drawings in a variety of media, fiber, clay, printmaking and sculpture. The program is supported by the South Florida National Parks Trust.
