HOMESTEAD, Fla. --- Six new mooring buoys were installed around the Fowey Rocks lighthouse in the northeast corner of Biscayne National Park. These buoys will help visitors to secure boats and enjoy park recreational activities, and also protect reefs from anchoring damage.
 
“The new mooring buoys make it easier for visitors to explore and enjoy the wonders of the park,” said Superintendent Margaret L. Goodro. “They are part of our ongoing efforts to provide increased recreational opportunities and protect resources.”
 
An experienced and dedicated team of National Park Service employees and volunteers installed the six mooring buoys at Fowey Rocks. The work included setting cement, drilling holes and installing pins, moorings and tackle. Mooring buoys help preserve the fragile coral reef ecosystem of the park by preventing anchors, ropes and chains from striking and damaging coral. They also provide a convenient way to secure boats.
