HOMESTEAD, Fla. --- Florida Power & Light Company (FPL) has partnered with and donated $10,000 to the Florida National Parks Association, Inc., to support Keep Biscayne Beautiful, a new campaign to unite individuals and organizations to raise awareness and take action to promote the health and enjoyment of Biscayne Bay and its surrounding areas.
Keep Biscayne Beautiful’s initiatives are focused on three main objectives: marine education, marine stewardship, and marine recreation.
“Biscayne Bay is a highly valued recreational and environmentally rich resource in South Florida,” said Michael Sole, vice president, environmental services, FPL. “At FPL, we believe in supporting organizations and causes that make South Florida a better place to live, work and play. Biscayne Bay is one of those special places that defines what it means to live in South Florida and a critical step to ensuring that it is viable for future generations is keeping it healthy and educating the public about doing so.”
The donation from FPL will help fund Biscayne Bay area water and beach clean ups which have, over the past 10 years, removed over 144 tons of marine debris. This includes covering the costs of boats to transport volunteers who work under the supervision of Biscayne National Park representatives to remove marine waste from this treasured South Florida ecosystem.
Keep Biscayne Beautiful is an exciting new campaign that supports important projects such as beach and marine debris cleanups, restoration of the iconic Boca Chita lighthouse, youth educational and fishing programs, additional marine patrols and expanding mooring buoys to protect coral. Individuals and organizations are invited to get involved by donating time or funds of any amount. A one-dollar donation removes one pound of debris!
