Both Biscayne and Redwood National Parks were established by Congress in October of 1968, and a new photography exhibit celebrates that coincidence simultaneously on both coasts of the United States. From the Redwood Forest to the Gulf Stream Waters features photographs of both parks by students participating in the National Parks at Night photo workshops earlier this year. The exhibit opens at Biscayne National Park on October 18, the park’s actual 50thbirthday, with a free opening reception from 5:30 - 8 pm on Saturday October 20 wrapping up a full-day celebration of the park’s birthday. The reception will feature live music with Grant Livingston (including Woody Guthrie’s classic This Land is Your Land that inspired the exhibit), a mini-photo workshop and birthday cake. The show will remain on view from 9-5 daily through January 13, 2019, and an identical show will be up at Redwood National and State Parks’ Hiouchi Visitor Center in California.
On Friday, October 19, the Biscayne National Park Institute will be hosting a special evening boat trip to Boca Chita Key. Instructors from National Parks at Night will offer instruction in night photography techniques to interested photographers. Others can simply enjoy a visit to the park’s most popular island at night…a rare treat for those without their own boats. Details on the trip and workshop are available at BiscayneNationalParkInstitute.org and NationalParksAtNight.com.
From the Redwood Forest to the Gulf Stream Waters is part of the park’s Community Artists Program, started in 1997 as an outlet for the works of artists who are inspired by the beauty of Biscayne National Park. Over the years, the gallery has hosted over 60 shows featuring photography, paintings and drawings in a variety of media, fiber, clay, printmaking and sculpture. The program is made possible by the South Florida National Parks Trust, and the 2018 shows celebrating the park’s 50th Anniversary Year are made possible by the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation through the Knight Arts Challenge, The Guerra Family Foundation, and the Miami-Dade County Department of Cultural Affairs. Additional support for this show comes from National Parks at Night and BayPhoto.com.
