National Park Week is April 17 to 25. To celebrate National Park Week and Junior Ranger day, Bighorn Canyon will be hosting several activities throughout the week.
One of the activities we will be hosting is a weeklong Junior Ranger Facebook series. Last year the park dedicated an entire day to virtual Junior Ranger activities. We decided that is too much time in front of the screen and not enough time outside, so this year we are going to spread it out over the week. Junior Rangers will need to interact with our Facebook page throughout the week to be entered the Junior Ranger prize at the end of the week. Posts will be scheduled for 4:00 PM, April 19, 8:30 AM April 20 – 22, and 4:00 PM April 23. We encourage teachers and their classes to participate.
April 21, 2021, is Arbor Day in Lovell. We will be participating in the Arbor Day celebration at the Lovell Community center with the Lovell 5th grade classes, the Town of Lovell, the Lovell Tree Board, and the Forest Service. We will announce the winners of the Arbor Day poster contest the following week.
April 22, 2021, Bighorn Canyon will be celebrating Earth Day with three park clean-up projects. One project will be cleaning the flowerbeds at the Lovell Visitor Center to prepare them for summer and the second will be cleaning up the Kane Cemetery. We are asking for volunteers to help us with our clean-up projects and to celebrate Earth Day. Please meet at the Lovell Visitor Center at 1 PM on April 22. Bring your work gloves and water. Rakes, clippers, and shovels will be provided. The third is a recycling challenge at Fort Smith. This call is for the Fort Smith residents. Clean-up your recycling and bring it to the Park Service Headquarters building from 1-4 PM. The park will have the recycling trailer parked outside. We are able to take the following items: newspaper, aluminum and steel cans, corrugated cardboard (no grey, white or black cardboard) and plastic bottles #1, #2, and #2 colored. Please ensure that all items are cleaned, dry, and separated.
