Lovell, WY – Following guidance from state and local public health authorities and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and in consultation with the Crow Tribe, Bighorn Canyon is increasing recreational access. The National Park Service (NPS) is working service wide with federal, state, and local public health authorities to closely monitor the COVID-19 pandemic and using a phased approach to increase access on a park-by-park basis.
June 3, 2020, the following facilities are open:
· Grapevine, Afterbay, Horseshoe Bend, and Trail Creek Campgrounds (campground fees apply)
· River launches at 3 Mile and Afterbay
· Horseshoe Bend Marina
· All park trails
· All lake boat ramps
June 5, 2020, Bighorn Canyon will reopen access to:
· MK Hill Picnic area
With public health in mind, the following facilities remain closed at this time:
• The Yellowtail Dam Visitor Center, near Fort Smith, MT, and the Bighorn Canyon Visitor Center, near Lovell, WY.
• Ok-A-Beh Marina, slips, and fuel docks. (There is no fuel on the lake.)
• Ok-A-Beh and Horseshoe Bend swim beach areas
As of June 3, the lake elevation was 3623.32 and rising. Due to low water levels, docks and floating restrooms have not yet been placed at Black Canyon, Dayboard 9, or Dryhead. Boaters need to use extreme caution. Shallow water and floating debris can ruin a great day on the lake.
For current lake conditions or help planning a visit, visitors may call the Cal S. Taggart Bighorn Canyon Visitor Center at 307-548-5406.
