August 2022 Programs at Bighorn Canyon

Bighorn Canyon National Recreation Area has a fun mix of programs for August.  

The following programs can be enjoyed on the South District of the park near Lovell, Wyoming: 
 

Geology 
August 18 – Join Volunteer Geologist Greg Jones for “A Walk Across an Ancient Beach” at the State Line Trail at 6:30 p.m. 

August 25 – Join Volunteer Geologist Greg Jones for a Geology Discussion at 6:30p.m. Check in at the Barry’s Landing picnic tables  

 

Ranch Tours 
There are four historic ranches at Bighorn Canyon. Each has their own unique story. Come and learn more about those stories from volunteers.   

August 18th – Volunteers Lynn Richardson and Mike Bridgeman will be at the Lockhart Ranch from 10 AM to 2 PM. They will be giving tours as groups come to the ranch. Check conditions at the visitor center in Lovell before heading up to the ranch. 

 

Ranger Programs 

August 12 – Meet with Ranger Milissa to learn about the historic town of Hillsboro and the Cedarvale Dude Ranch. We will meet at the trail head for the historic town of Hillsboro. This can be found after the Trail Creek Camping area up a dirt road.   

August 13 – Hike with Ranger Martin on the Upper Layout Creek Trail. You will walk through time as Ranger Martin shares stories from the Bighorn Canyon ranching history. Participants should plan on meeting at the corrals at the Ewing-Snell ranch at 7 AM. After a safety briefing participants will carpool to the upper trailhead. This is a four-mile round trip hike with over 1000 ft elevation gain. Hiking sticks are recommended as well as proper clothing, water, and snacks.   

August 26th – Join Ranger Lynn for Plant Bingo from 10:00-2:00. Play Plant Bingo on the Upper Layout Trail to learn about native plants. Match the picture to the plant on the trail to "X" off on your card. Find all 9 plants on the bingo card to win a Postcard from our WNPA Bookstore! 

 

The following programs can be enjoyed on the North District of the park near Fort Smith, Montana: 

 

Coffee With a Ranger 

Every Sunday morning park staff will host Coffee with A Ranger. On August 7th, Coffee with a Ranger will be at the Afterbay Campground at 9:30 near Fort Smith, MT. The next Sunday, August 14th, Coffee with a Ranger will be at Ok-A-Beh. The program will alternate locations weekly. This is a great time to relax, ask questions and learn more about the park and staff.   

 

Movie Night 

August 13th – Ranger Moore and Ranger Holdorf invite you to join them in the viewing of "Our Great National Parks", episodes shown will be, “Chilean Patagonia” at the Amphitheater at the Afterbay Campground near Fort Smith, MT at 8:30 P.M.  

 

Billings Library Programs
 August 18th and August 25th – Join Ranger Holdorf for a two-part series on black bears at the Billings, MT Public Library. The first part of the series is geared towards younger children, ideally ages 2-6, on August 18th at 11:00 and will cover how to be safe while in bear country; while getting hands-on experience with animal fur, scat, and take home a fun activity packet. No registration needed. Part two of the series, geared towards children ages 7-12, will be on August 25th at 11:00 and will discuss steps to keep yourself safe while in bear country; while getting hands-on experience with animal fur, scat, and take home a fun activity packet. No registration needed. 

 

Lake Conditions 

The lake level as of July 28th, is 3636.6. Due to high water, there is a sizable amount of driftwood and other debris in the lake. In several turns of the lake there are driftwood rafts with large trees in them. These driftwood rafts can cause serious damage to props and lower units. Docks were placed at Black Canyon campground.    

 

Bighorn Canyon hopes you can join us for one or more of these programs.
