Bighorn Canyon National Recreation Area has a fun mix of programs scheduled for August in the park’s South District near Lovell, Wyoming. No special programs are currently scheduled during August in the park’s North District near Fort Smith, Montana.
Night Sky – Light Pollution, Night Sky Photography, Constellations and Stories
Friday, August 2 – Join professional photographer, Mike Blissett of Blissett Nature Photography, at Devil Canyon Overlook at 9:00pm. Ranger Jen Prentiss will briefly discuss night sky pollution and what we can do to help prevent it. Mike will cover some of the basics of night sky photography and point out different constellations as the sky darkens. Ranger Jen will share Crow stories about some of the easily recognizable constellations. Bring your camera, telescope, or just your curiosity.
Boone and Crockett Club’s Influence on Western Conservation
Friday, August 9 – Join Park Ranger Todd Johnson at the Cal S. Taggart Visitor Center Auditorium at 6:30pm to learn about the creation of the Boone and Crockett Club, the oldest wildlife conservation organization in North America. Ranger Todd will share information about the personalities who helped to shape its focus on preserving big game and conservation, and how these members were instrumental in the establishment of federal organizations like the National Park Service and the US Forest Service.
Yoga on the Beach
Saturday, August 10 - Ever thought you would be doing Yoga on the beach while in Wyoming?
Join volunteer, Wendy Henderson, at 9:00am for an hour of rejuvenation on the beach at Horseshoe Bend. Bring your own mat or beach towel, a hand towel, and a water bottle.
Full Moon Hike
Thursday, August 15 - Join Ranger Todd Johnson and Youth Conservation Corps member, Haley Lynn, for a hike in the dark! This full moon hike will meet at 9:00pm at the Cal S. Taggart Visitor Center in Lovell and car pool to the Lower Layout Trailhead. Please bring layers of clothing, bug spray, a headlamp or flashlight, snacks, and water. This hike is approximately 3 hours long.
Kane Cemetery Talk
Friday, August 16 - From dust to mud, gone but not forgotten, all that remains are the memories and stories of the people who lived there. Join former Kane resident, Karen Spragg at 6:30 PM at the Cal S. Taggart Visitor Center, as she expertly tells us about the lives of the people and the town itself.
Established in 1912 Kane, Wyoming became a main stock shipping point for cattle and sheep. Though located in a place where the wind blew almost constantly, and there was nothing much but dirt and sagebrush, the little town grew to have a bank, two general stores, two hotels, a motel, a dance/pool hall, and a school. In 1965 near the completion of the Yellowtail Dam the BOR feared that the newly established Bighorn Lake would flood Kane. They condemned the land and bought it from the community.
Non-NPS Events
Saturday, August 17 - Horseshoe Bend Marina is hosting a full moon party. Contact the marina at 307-548-7230 for more information.
