Every year Bighorn Canyon conducts restoration projects at one of the four historic ranches. This year the crew will be working on the stud barn at Hillsboro. Before the restoration work begins, the floor and surrounding area must be surveyed and excavated. This work is normally completed by our park archeologist. This year we are inviting the public to help.
On Saturday, May 11, Bighorn Canyon will host an adult archeology field day. The day will begin at 7:30 AM at the Lovell Visitor Center. Park Archeologist, Richard Olsen, and Historic Preservationist, Ted Preator, will give a short presentation on rules, regulations, safety and history. The group will then carpool to Hillsboro. Participants will then help excavate the floor of the stud barn while learning archeology techniques.
There is no charge for the activity, but space is limited to 10 adults. To reserve a spot, call the Bighorn Canyon Visitor Center at 307-548-5406. Participants will need to wear weather appropriate clothing and bring work gloves, a sack lunch and water.
If you have questions or would like more information, contact Christy Fleming at 307-548-5406 or Richard Olsen at 307-548-5409.
