Lovell, WY: “I Spy Trees” was this year’s theme for the Wyoming State Arbor Day Poster Contest which is sponsored by the Wyoming State Forestry Division and Wyoming Project Learning Tree. Lovell’s fifth grade students designed and submitted original posters that were judged by Tree Committee members and representatives from the Town of Lovell and the National Park Service. Before pen met paper, Town of Lovell Park Manager, Gary Emmett, spoke to each class about Arbor Day and why trees are important in our communities.

With this information each student created a poster to depict what they learned based on the theme. The posters were then judged and 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners were chosen in each classroom, and a grand prize winner selected overall. Minerals Technologies American Colloid generously donated funds for prizes.

Because of the current COVID 19 health crisis and directives for social distancing, the Tree Committee had to be creative on how to keep the tradition of presenting the awards alive. After the poster winners’ parents were notified, the students’ teachers, the Town of Lovell and National Park Service staff, and Lovell PD lined up in their cars in front of Lovell Elementary School sounding celebratory sirens while students received their prizes.
