Notes: His birthdate is approximate. He was born about 1766. He had blue eyes and a long nose. He took the Franciscan habit at age 16 at the Convento de San Julian de Agrada. He received his penetente at the Franciscan Convento de Santo Domingo de la Calzada, Spain. He sailed from Cádiz in December, 1789 and arrived in New Spain on March 23, 1790, destined for the College of Querétaro. At the age of 29 he arrived in Tumacácori on July 10, 1794. He was sent to Tubutama in May, 1796, and was there until December 1797. By January 1799 he was back at Tumacácori. He was happy at Tumacácori and started the new church there. Since there were not legal papers setting forth title or boundaries to the mission, he implemented procedures to rectify that in 1807. He served longer than any other priest at Tumacácori - 26 years. He died on 13 December 1820 and was buried in the Jesuit church on on the fifteenth, by Padre Estelric. His body was exhumed by Padre Líberos on 13 December 1822 and reburied in the Franciscan church. His body was again exhumed on 21 February 1935 and reburied at San Xavier del Bac. Padre Estelric recorded the following nearly two months after his burial: "In the year of Our Lord 1821(sic.), on December 13, The Reverend Father Narciso Gutierrez passed from this life into eternity. His body was buried on the fifteenth of the same month beneath the steps of the main altar, on the Epistle side, and for this truth I sign as above." Padre Líberos recorded the following at his reburial: "In the year of Our Lord 1822, on December 13, I, Fr. Ramón Líberos, Minister of this Mission of Señor San José de Tumacácori moved the bodies of the dead Fathers Fr. Balthasar Carrillo and Fr. Narciso Gutierrez from the old church to the new. I buried them in the sanctuary on the Gospel side facing the altar. For this truth, I sign as above." |
