April 10, 2021, 5:00-6:00 pm Virtual Panel Discussion
In partnership with the American Civil War Museum, we are proud to offer “Legacies of Appomattox,” a virtual panel discussion of the lasting legacies of the surrender and Freedom Day, April 9, 1865. People tend to think of Appomattox as the place where the American Civil War ended, but there is more to the story. How did newly freed African Americans seek to live out their freedom? What plans did members of the Grand Army of the Republic have for the village of Appomattox? How was the memory of the Civil War shaped in the months and years following the surrender?
The panel will feature Reverend Al Jones, founder of the Appomattox Black Civil War Legacy Museum, Chris Graham Ph.D., exhibits curator, American Civil War Museum, and Patrick Schroeder, historian, Appomattox Court House National Historical Park.
Visit www.acwm.org to register in advance for this program. The program is free, and pre-registration is required.
April 8-11, 2021, 9:00-5:00 On-Site Offerings
Although the park will not offer its usual slate of special talks, living history encampment, and demonstrations to commemorate the 156th Anniversary of the Surrender and Freedom Day, the park will remain open with visitor services for the commemorative weekend. To protect the health of those who live, work, and visit our national parks and facilities, and in support of the President’s Executive Order on Protecting the Federal Workforce and Requiring Mask-Wearing, face masks are now required in all National Park Service buildings and facilities. Masks are also required on NPS-managed lands when physical distancing cannot be maintained, such as narrow or busy trails, overlooks, and parking lots.
The McLean House will be open to visitors from 9-5 each day, and staff will be on hand to share the powerful stories of the surrender and emancipation in Virginia. Living historians will also be present in the park's historic village to share different perspectives on the events of mid-April 1865.
On April 8, 2021, the park historian will be on site at the Appomattox Station battlefield to provide informal interpretation from 3:00-5:00 pm.
