BAR HARBOR, MAINE – Currently, sections of the Park Loop Road in Acadia National Park remain very icy and snowy and the anticipated opening on Monday, April 15 must be delayed. As soon as possible, after ice melts and the roads are safe for motor vehicles, the Park Loop Road will open.
The Hulls Cove Visitor Center is not anticipated to open until late May. Local contractors, King Construction Services Inc. of Jonesport, Maine (with offices in Ellsworth), have been working in the visitor center for months to create a better arrangement of visitor services and upgraded restrooms (although the theater where the park film has been shown is being removed).
Park information services will continue to be available at the Bar Harbor Chamber of Commerce Visitor Center and additional information services will be available at the Sieur de Monts Nature Center beginning Saturday April 20.
“In some locations the ice across the Park Loop Road is at least one foot thick,” said Superintendent Kevin Schneider. “We anticipate opening the road to motor vehicles as soon as it is safe to do so. The park is beautiful at this time of year and people can still use the Park Loop Road for walking and bicycling, being mindful of gates swung across the road and heavy equipment trying to clear ice.”
Park entrance passes will be available at the Thompson Island Information Center beginning on Wednesday May 1. Depending on when the Park Loop Road opens, the Sand Beach Entrance Station (located on the one-way section of the Park Loop Road) will be staffed and entrance passes will be sold starting on Wednesday May 1. Park entrance passes are required in all areas of Acadia National Park. Note, park entrance passes can be purchased in-person and online. If an entrance pass is purchased online, the pass must be printed and displayed in the parked vehicle. The NPS will continue to open other park facilities, including restrooms, campground, and picnic areas, throughout May in preparation for the summer season.
