Yosemite National Park’s Wawona Road Rehabilitation Project Concluding for 2010

In May of this year, Yosemite National Park initiated an extensive project to repair and repave approximately 25 miles of road within Yosemite National Park. The scope of the project includes work on the Wawona Road from the South Entrance (Highway 41 coming from Fresno) to Yosemite Valley. The majority of the work has concluded for this year and the project will be completed in spring 2011.  

Highlights of the project include:

• Pulverizing existing roadway and repaving the road surface;
• Culvert repairs and cleaning;
• Replacing curbing throughout the corridor;
  
• Improving drainage along the corridor;
• Re-grading and/or paving the existing pullouts;
• Repaving the road surface

 
These improvements were completed through a partnership with the Federal Highway Administration and the National Park Service.  

Work will resume in spring 2011, to finish all remaining items. The work that needs to be completed consists of primarily of constructing culvert headwalls. It is anticipated that this residual work will require approximately two weeks to complete, with 30-minute delays. Exact dates of work and times of delays are forthcoming.  
 
The National Park Service has developed a revegetation plan for the areas adjacent to the work completed on the Wawona Road. The revegetation work will stabilize the soil, provide erosion control, and enhance the scenic qualities of the road corridor.
