Kathie Orr, a Yosemite volunteer and former Yosemite Association board member, died of natural causes in her trailer at North Pines Campground on July 23, 2007. She was 72. Kathie's visits to the park as a child and with her own children inspired over 20 years of dedicated service in Yosemite National Park as a volunteer in the Valley Visitor Center. Additionally, many rangers will remember her vivid stories about her early visits, her dedication to her country, and her heartfelt enthusiasm for our shared heritage. Acting Yosemite National Park Superintendent Kevin Cann said on Tuesday "Kathie has inspired countless employees and visitors with her spirit, wit, and hardworking attitude." Park Ranger Andy Fristensky, who supervises the Yosemite Valley Visitor Center, said "The beauty of Yosemite inspired Kathie to love and care for this place. She will be missed tremendously." In 2002, Kathie was given the Presidential Volunteer Service Award in recognition of her over 4,000 hours of volunteer service. This award honors Americans who, by their demonstrated commitment and example, inspire others to engage in volunteer service. By the end of 2006, Kathie had given almost 7,000 hours to serving the park's visitors. Kathie's dedication to education in Yosemite was also demonstrated by her commitment to the Yosemite Association, Yosemite's cooperating association, where she volunteered from 1987 to 1999. Kathie also served as a board member for the Yosemite Association from 1991 until 2003. |
