Highway Closed For At Least 24 Hours

At approximately 11:00 a.m. today, December 30, a large rock fell onto Highway 140/El Portal Road blocking all traffic from entering or exiting Yosemite National Park and closing the road.  The rock fell approximately one half mile east of Yosemite View Lodge in El Portal, just inside the Yosemite National Park boundary. The rock is estimated to be approximately 10-15 feet in height, six feet wide, and four feet deep.  There were no injuries or damage to property during the rockfall.

Due to additional loose rocks, as well as the blocked road, Highway 140/El Portal Road will remain closed for at least 24-hours while Yosemite Road Crews assess the area of the rockfall and remove all obstructions and safety concerns from the roadway. For current road information, please call 209-372-0200.

Please keep in mind that both Highways 120 and 41 into Yosemite National Park remain open. Chain restrictions may apply.
