WIND CAVE NATIONAL PARK, SD – Following a night of limited fire activity, fire crews are working to secure the edges of the Rankin Fire. As of 11:00 a.m. Saturday, August 29, the lightning-caused wildfire remained at an estimated 28 acres in size.No flare-ups were observed overnight Friday by fire monitors. No air resources have been called for Saturday, and some ground crews from assisting agencies have been released. Remaining crews are shoring up hose and fire line around the fire’s perimeter. The fire is burning in grass and dead and downed trees in an old prescribed-burn area. Smoke may be visible at times throughout the day depending on fire activity.
No structures are threatened by the fire. Park trails north of Wind Cave Canyon are closed to hiking and backcountry camping until further notice. All park roads and several trails remain open, along with the Elk Mountain campground. Park visitors may see smoke from park roads and overlooks and are advised to be alert for fire vehicles responding to the blaze.
