Whiskeytown, Calif. – The National Park Service is excited to announce the official re-opening of the Peltier Bridge Campground. Peltier Valley Road is now open from Paige Bar Road to Peltier Bridge Campground. Sites 4 through 9 are open for camping as well and they are back on recreation.gov for online reservations.
Sites 1 through 3 will remain closed indefinitely due to storm damage that occurred over the winter and because there are still hazard trees in that area. Visitors will see a closure sign in front of these sites that says, “For public safety area closed by order of the superintendent. 36CFR1.5F.” The Peltier Trail and those trails associated with nearby NEED Camp remain closed to the public at this time. Youth Conservation Corps crews are repainting the outside of the vault toilets at the campground and will be finished by the end of the week. The restrooms are open while the painting is completed. “I continue to be amazed by the dedication and commitment of our staff to opening the park to the public,” said Superintendent Hoines, “We will continue working hard at making Whiskeytown National Recreation Area safe and accessible.” Peltier Bridge Campground joins Oak Bottom, Dry Creek Group sites, and Brandy Creek as the open and accessible campground facilities at Whiskeytown.
National Park Service staff enthusiastically invite visitors back, are happy to answer questions about the progress made toward recovery and re-opening Whiskeytown National Recreation Area, and celebrate this step forward in providing recreational opportunities to the public.
On July 23rd, 2018, the Carr Fire started on Hwy 299 inside Whiskeytown National Recreation Area. Suppression response was immediate and aggressive, with unified joint command of the National Park Service and CalFire, with a robust, full-scale initial attack. In spite of full suppression tactics, the fire quickly spread north out of the park, eventually burning 39,000 of the park's 42,000 acres, and forcing campground, inholding, local community, and National Park Service staff evacuations.
