In concert with the Healthy Shasta Initiative and First Lady Michelle Obama's Let's Move Campaign, both of which recognize daily exercise as a good "prescription" for a healthy lifestyle, Whiskeytown will be offering hikes on the weekends starting from March 24, 2012. "As a partner in Healthy Shasta and the First Lady's meaningful endeavors, the National Park Service is committed to providing our community members with opportunities to boost their physical activity while discovering the natural wonders of Whiskeytown's backcountry," stated Superintendent Jim Milestone.
The initial hikes are designed to introduce visitors to some of the easier trails in the park in order to work up to hiking to each of the waterfalls in the park. "Now is a great time to hit the trails with the entire family and build up to the challenge of hiking to all three waterfalls during our special Waterfall Challenge which runs during National Park Week from April 21 through April 29," concluded Milestone. National Park Week is an annual event to celebrate the diversity, beauty, and history found in our national park system. National Park Week is also designated as a fee-free period throughout the National Park Service to encourage everyone to experience and discover our national treasures. Visitors to Whiskeytown do not need to display a parking pass on their vehicles during this period.
The ranger-led hikes are free and open to all ages and space is limited to 20 people. A day use fee for each vehicle is required except during National Park Week. Reservations will begin on Sunday, March 18. Call the Visitor Center at (530) 246-1225 to sign-up your family and friends and to obtain more information about each hike.
