Whiskeytown, CA - Whiskeytown National Recreation Area will soon begin pile burning to remove hazardous fuels within the park boundary. This work will begin as early as October 26th and could last through the fall and winter seasons, depending on weather and fuels conditions as well as site conditions. Areas of the park that will have pile burning are numerous and include the Visitor Center, Oak Bottom, Carr Powerhouse, East Beach, Whiskey Creek, South Fork Mountain, Brandy Creek, South Shore Drive, Crystal Creek and the Tower House Historic District. The total pile burning project area encompasses 149 acres.

Smoke will be visible within and outside the park during burn operations and smoke may continue to be visible through the following few days. Fire managers will be working with the Air Quality Management Board to ensure compliance with air quality regulations and health and safety conditions.

The pile burning operation will create a landscape with a reduced amount of ladder fuels and dead vegetation. Once treated, the site will provide defensible space and better opportunities to control fires because of reduced fire behavior.
