The National Park Service plans to schedule monthly moonlight hikes throughout the summer as one of its new interpretive programs offered to the public. Join a ranger on a guided evening hike on June 7 and  experience the beauty of Whiskeytown by soft light of the silvery moon.  Visitors are asked to meet at the Visitor Center at 7 p.m. and from there everyone will car pool to the Mount Shasta Mine Loop trailhead. Bring water, hiking sticks, a small flashlight and a healthy nighttime snack. Be sure to wear sturdy hiking boots or athletic shoes with great tread. Maps and trail guides will be provided for this moderate loop trail which is 3 ½ miles in length.  The hike will last about 3 hours. For more information about the moonlight hike contact Nancy Quirus at 242-3454.

This summer the National Park Service is also encouraging folks to schedule their own special group kayak tour for friends and family. Businesses and community groups are also invited to participate! Minimum group size is 12 people for each special kayak tour. Phone reservations will begin on Monday, June 1. For more information about the kayak program and special group tours and to make an advance reservation please call (530) 242-3462.

The Visitor Center has also begun its extended summer hours and is now open daily from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. through Monday, September 7. Located 8 miles west of Redding at the intersection of Highway 299 and Kennedy Memorial Drive, the Visitor Center offers exhibits on the history and development of the Whiskeytown area as well as information on summer interpretive programs, camping, and other local information. Annual and daily passes as well as books, maps, postcards and other publications can also be purchased at the center.
