530-242-3451Whiskeytown National Recreation Area will continue to offer kayak and hiking tours into the month of September. “Visitors will have several more opportunities to attend ranger-guided kayak tours on the lake and hikes into the backcountry providing them with different perspectives of the natural wonders we have in the park,” stated superintendent Jim Milestone.
The popular kayak tours will continue to be scheduled at 10am and 1pm on Saturday and Sunday through most of September. Reservations can be made for any of the weekend tours until they are filled by calling 242-3462.
Morning hikes to the three major waterfalls will also be offered on the weekends. “As the weather starts to cool down it becomes a perfect time to join us for a hike to some of the more pristine areas in the the park,” continued Milestone. "We encourage park visitors to join us for these programs so they can learn about why Whiskeytown NRA is special enough to be included with Yosemite and the Lincoln Memorial as part of America’s National Park system," concluded Milestone.
Starting on Tuesday September 4, 2007 the Visitor Center will be open daily from 10am to 4pm. Located 8 miles west of Redding at the intersection of Highway 299 and Kennedy Memorial Drive, the Visitor Center offers exhibits on the history and development of the Whiskeytown area as well as information on interpretive programs, camping, and other local information. All programs are subject to change; please call the Visitor Center at (530) 246-1225 for the most current information. Although participants must have a valid park entrance pass to participate, there is no additional fee for attending any of the park programs.
Kayak Tours
September kayak tours will be available on weekends only beginning at 10am and 1pm. Reservations can be made for any of the remaining tours until they are filled by calling 242-3462. This will conclude the kayak season until next summer.
All kayak-program participants must know how to swim and will be required to wear a life vest. The park will provide tandem kayaks for up to twenty-four participants. Park visitors with their own kayaks are welcome to accompany the tour group. Each six to twelve year old child must be accompanied by an adult who will serve as their kayak partner. Groups of children over twelve must be accompanied by at least one responsible adult. The kayak program is not available for children younger than six years old.
