2017 Solar Eclipse Event at Whiskeytown National Recreation AreaWhiskeytown National Recreation Area, in partnership with the Shasta Astronomy Club, invites visitors to the park to witness the partial solar eclipse on Monday, August 21st, 2017. The event will be held at the Oak Bottom boat launch parking lot and will commence at 9:00 AM and end at 11:00 AM. The eclipse will begin around 9:15 AM when the moon first starts to pass between the sun and the Earth, and reach maximum eclipse around 10:20 AM. Solar telescopes will be available to get a safe and closer look at the eclipse, which will be around 86% of totality at our locality. For safe viewing, eclipse glasses must be used. A limited quantity of free commemorative eclipse glasses will be available at the event. Remember to never look at the sun with your naked eyes; or through a telescope, binoculars or camera viewfinder, without a solar filter. Participants will have the opportunity to take a ranger-led solar system walk, earn a Junior Ranger Night Explorer patch, and receive a special Junior Ranger Eclipse Explorer sticker badge. Call Park Ranger Matt Switzer at (530) 242-3454 for more information about this special event. For more information on Whiskeytown National Recreation Area, please call or stop by the park’s visitor center daily between 10:00 AM and 4:00 PM.
