Perseid Meteor Shower Party at Brandy Creek Beach

Whiskeytown National Recreation Area, in partnership with the Shasta Astronomy Club, will be holding a special star party to view the Perseid Meteor Shower on Saturday evening, August 12, 2017. Knowledgeable and passionate amateur astronomers will assist in meteorite viewing and provide telescopes to view the moon, planets, and other astronomical wonders during what is often considered the most brilliant meteor shower of the year. Family-friendly activities will include ranger-led solar system walks, a Super Space Scavenger Hunt, and opportunities to earn a Junior Ranger Night Explorer patch!

The event will commence shortly after sunset at Brandy Creek Beach parking lot B, and will remain open until midnight. Visitors are encouraged to bring lounge chairs, beach towels, flashlights (red lights/lens covers are best for preserving your night vision), food, non-alcoholic drinks and extra clothing for the nighttime star party. A $10 seven-day pass is required and is available at the Visitor Center (open 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.) or through the fee envelope stations (check or exact change required) at the Visitor Center or the entrance to the Brandy Creek Beach parking lot area.

Please note: All telescopes are privately owned and only available through the generosity of individuals from the Shasta Astronomy Club. Visitors should always practice proper telescope etiquette by never touching or looking through an eyepiece without the telescope operators' permission, and being courteous to other visitors that are also waiting to view the night sky.
