Jemez Springs, NM – Valles Caldera National Preserve has extended the time vehicles can travel the entire backcountry route from October 31 to November 15. This gives an extra two weeks to drive into the backcountry to experience the changing of the seasons and explore the wonders of the park.
Starting November 16, most of the backcountry route will close to vehicles. The winter backcountry route for vehicles will extend from the Entrance Station up to the cabin district. Depending on weather and road conditions, vehicle may be allowed beyond the cabin district as far as the northern end of Valle Grande.
Valles Caldera National Preserve | About 1.25 million years ago, a spectacular volcanic eruption created the 13-mile wide circular depression now known as Valles Caldera. The preserve is known for its huge mountain meadows, abundant wildlife, and meandering streams. The area also preserves the homeland of ancestral native peoples and embraces a rich ranching history. National Park Service | More than 20,000 National Park Service employees care for America's 420+ national parks and work with communities across the nation to help preserve local history and create close-to-home recreational opportunities. Visit us at nps.gov.
