Overview

Haleakalā offers four units for teachers to use in their classrooms. Each unit has a variety of "pre-visit" and "post-visit" lesson plans which are consecutive, but feel free to pick and choose from them. Using the lessons before and after the Haleakalā field trip will help students develop a greater understanding of the topic and gain a deeper appreciation for Haleakalā National Park. Each unit was designed to meet Hawai'i Content and Performance Standards III and Next Generation Science Standards.

Itinerary

9:00-9:15am: (15 min) Welcome/Rules/Safety
Bus arrives at Headquarters Visitor Center (HQVC) where rangers will greet you on the bus. Rangers will review park rules and give safety briefing.

9:15-9:30am: (15 min) Introduction to Geology/Snack
Students use restrooms. Rangers gather group in courtyard to do a program overview while they are snacking. Students load bus and rangers will advise the bus driver where to park at Haleakalā Visitor Center (HVC).

9:30-10:00am: (30 min) Travel Bus drives to HVC
Rangers lead bus in separate vehicle. Both rangers will meet the group near bus at HVC and divides group in half (Group 1 and Group 2).

10:00-11:10am: (70 min) Programs
The two ranger-led groups begin the programs. (35 min) Geology activity: 30 min & 5 min transition (Group 1, 2) (35 min) Guided hike: 30 min & 5 min transition (Group 2, 1)

11:10-11:25am: (15 min) Conclusion/Goodbye
The entire class rejoins and does the program conclusion together. Students can use restrooms before drive to Headquarters Visitor Center. The rangers escort class to the bus.

11:25-11:55pm: (30 min) Travel
The entire class gets back on the bus. Bus drives to Headquarters Visitor Center.

11:55-12:25pm: (30 min) Lunch
Students have lunch at the Headquarters Visitor Center (HQVC) picnic area across the visitor parking. After lunch, students get back on bus and drive back to school. Restrooms are available at Park Headquarters Visitor Center (HQVC) and Haleakalā Visitor Center (HVC). You will have time for a quick rest room break before and after your program.
