Some excursion stations are NOT accessible or may not fit your individual accessibility needs. Please refer to the guide below for information about the accessibility of each station. We are working to correct accessibility deficiencies to ensure an enjoyable experience for all of our visitors.
General Information
- Train cars have stools and stairs for boarding, but the steps are steep and can be challenging to navigate. There is a passenger car that has a wheelchair lift available for most train rides. The passenger car can only hold two wheelchairs during rides due to Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) standards.
- The other historic train cars have narrow doorways and walkways that are not suitable for wheelchair passage. Our heavy-duty wheelchairs that are available to borrow at the Visitor Center are 29” wide (W). The dimensions of our historic train cars are as follows: 25” W walkway, 27” W inter-car doorways, and a 21” W doorway connecting the wheelchair-accessible car to the passenger car.
- Only a couple station platforms have a designated area for disembarking wheelchairs and other wheeled mobility devices from the train. Please read each station’s individual accessibility information below to find out if wheelchair disembarking is available.
- Service animals are allowed on the train and may go where passengers are permitted to go.
- All tracks at the stations are on top of and surrounded by gravel to some degree, which create an uneven walking surface.
- The historic train cars are not climate controlled and do not always provide heating on excursions. Train rides in the summer can get hot and, during our fall excursions, temperatures may drop below freezing. Please plan your visit accordingly.
- There is one restroom per passenger car on rides and excursions, but they are not suitable for wheelchair access.
- Some stations only have an outdoor boarding platform and do not have a station building. As a result, some stations may not provide heating, AC, or restrooms.
- Station accessibility information is divided into 8 categories: Access Rating, Station Type, Getting Around the Station, Wheelchair Boarding & Disembarking Availability, Parking, Restrooms, Seating, and Additional Info.
Access Ratings
Access ratings are determined by the number of access barriers identified at a station that impact an individual with a disability’s visiting experience at the station. For more information about specific access barriers around each station, please read the “Getting Around the Station” and the “Additional Info” categories in the Stations section. IMPORTANT NOTE: These ratings are for the station buildings, platforms, and grounds themselves, and do NOT include whether wheelchair boarding and disembarking is available.
The access ratings scale is made up of the following ratings:
- GOOD - Platforms, station building entrances, grounds, outdoor pathways, and interiors are largely accessible to persons with mobility, visual and Deaf and Hard of Hearing disabilities.
- ADEQUATE - Platforms, station building entrances, grounds, outdoor pathways, and interiors are not fully accessible due to minor barriers. For example, pathway surface material may be in disrepair.
- LIMITED - Platforms, station building entrances, grounds, outdoor pathways, and interiors are inaccessible due to significant barriers.
