The Great Meadow at Fort Vancouver National Historic Site is a great place to picnic, play, and gather!
During the 19th century, this area was covered by agricultural fields maintained by the employees of the Hudson's Bay Company's Fort Vancouver. Later, the fields became part of the US Army's Vancouver Barracks. In the early 20th century, stables were located here for the military post's artillery. During World War I, parts of the Great Meadow were covered by white canvas tents used by the soldiers of the Spruce Production Division.
Today, this area is located to the south of the Fort Vancouver Visitor Center and north of East 5th Street. Grassy fields and shady trees make this an ideal spot for a picnic at one of our many public picnic areas. Learn more about picnicking at Fort Vancouver National Historic Site here.
