For the third year in a row Pipe Spring National Monument will receive a field trip grant for the 2019-2020 school year from the National Park Foundation, the official nonprofit partner of the National Park Service. Students participating in the Every Kid Outdoors program at Pipe Spring will partake in a variety of activities both in the classroom and onsite that highlight the day-to-day lives and concerns of 1870s period characters by exploring the complicated history of Euro-American and Southern Paiute interactions, the natural resources of the area, and the impacts human use has had on the environment. These programs give students hands-on experiences that bring classroom concepts to life and impact their engagement with the natural and cultural history of their local area.
Pipe Spring will be proud to once again host as many local students as possible for hands-on and immersive educational experiences during the upcoming school year, from St. George, UT to Page, AZ. Last school year, Pipe Spring was able to reach over 1,500 local area students thanks to the grant, allowing many from Title I schools to visit for the first time. Because transportation costs are often cited as the main obstacle for school field trips, the monument will use the grant to assist teachers in funding field trips they ordinarily would not be able to afford.
In addition, 4th graders will also get a chance to receive the Every Kid Outdoors annual pass that provides fourth grade students, along with their families, friends and classmates, free access to Pipe Spring, along with more than 2,000 other federal recreation areas for a year. The Every Kid Outdoors Program encourages fourth graders to explore, learn, and recreate in spectacular settings, including national parks, wildlife refuges, marine sanctuaries, and forests. Last year Pipe Spring issued more than five hundred 4th Grade passes to local area students and hopes to issue more for this upcoming school year.
To obtain the free pass, fourth grade students visit the Every Kid Outdoors website, participate in a short educational activity, and download a voucher. The voucher is valid for multiple use between September 1, 2019 and August 31, 2020 to correspond to the traditional school year. The voucher may be exchanged for a plastic keepsake pass at participating federal lands.
The voucher or pass grants free entry for fourth graders, all children under 16 in the group and up to three accompanying adults (or an entire car for drive-in parks) to most federally managed lands and waters. The pass does not cover expanded amenity fees such as camping or boat rides.
The Every Kid Outdoors Program was established by Congress in 2019. It replaces the Every Kid in a Park Program which was launched in 2015. It is an interagency collaboration between the National Park Service, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Bureau of Reclamation, Bureau of Land Management, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, and U.S. Forest Service.
