Scientists in Parks: Ecology Assistant

Compensation: $600/week, $450 one-time relocation stipend, Americorps Education Award upon successful completion of position

Other opportunities include operating and maintaining Manta water quality probes and HOBO conductivity loggers, macroinvertebrate sampling and ID, assisting with inland lake water quality monitoring and sampling, as well as supporting various wetland monitoring programs. There will also be regular lab projects including utilizing microscopes for plant and invertebrate identification, processing water quality samples, and calibrating water quality instruments.

The SIP will accompany aquatic biologists during aquatic sampling activities, allowing them to gain hands-on experience with a range of aquatic biology practices and equipment while further developing their own aquatic plant project. This project will directly inform and draw from other on-going monitoring programs, giving the park a fuller picture of its aquatic health and needs. This project will also lay the groundwork for a more extensive and robust plant community and lake ice study in the future. The SIP may even rediscover and confirm the presence of three special status plants not seen at PIRO in several decades.
