Put-in-Bay, Ohio – For more than a decade area artists have gathered at Perry’s Victory and International Peace Memorial to provide free art classes for children 3-12 years of age through the Arts on Erie program.
This year art classes will be held for four consecutive days beginning Monday, June 25, on the back porch of the National Park’s Visitor Center. Morning classes are from 10 am to noon, and afternoon classes are from 1 to 3 pm each day. All materials are provided, sessions are free, and registration is not required.
“Arts on Erie is one of the special programs we host at Perry’s Victory,” said Superintendent Barbara Fearon. “The art classes are designed to provide children with an opportunity they might not otherwise have.”
Superintendent Fearon said she plans to attend Thursday’s afternoon class when kids will be painting pictures of the Memorial in acrylic and in watercolor.
“How fun for the participants and the park,” she said. “I cannot wait to see what these young artists create.”
Well known watercolorist Celeste Mycoskie, who summers on South Bass Island, has organized the event for many years. She will teach three days this year and Brecksville artist Jeanne Henderson will teach Wednesday’s class. This year’s classes focus on painting with acrylics and watercolors.
·Monday: Painting rocks with acrylic paint and an introduction to painting with watercolors.
·Tuesday: Making a “Magic Tree” on watercolor paper
·Wednesday: Abstract Painting pouring acrylic paint on canvas
·Thursday: Painting Perry’s Victory and International Peace Memorial in acrylic or watercolor
A grant provided by the Put-in-Bay Recreation Committee covers the artists’ time and lunch each day. Perry’s Victory and International Peace Memorial is providing watercolors, acrylic paints, canvases and watercolor paper for the art classes.
Arts on Erie began as a collaboration between the Put-in-Bay Arts Council, the Put-in-Bay Chamber of Commerce, and Perry’s Victory and International Peace Memorial more than 15 years ago. The Chamber and the National Park have continued to support Arts on Erie as an annual free children’s arts program.
