Petrified Forest National Park Learning Center Lecture Series, March 2007 Petrified Forest, AZ ― Archeologists Drs. Kelley Hayes-Gilpin (Northern Arizona University) and Dennis Gilpin (SWCA Environmental Consultants) will be providing an hour-long presentation titled “Archaeological Research in the Petrified Forest Region: Over a Century of Exciting Discoveries” as part of the park’s ongoing Learning Center Lecture Series. The lecture will discuss the history of archeological reconnaissance in the park and surrounding areas, focusing on aspects of Walter Hough’s work in the area in the late 1800s. The Gilpin’s are leading experts on the archeology of the southwest. The lecture will begin at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, March 7, and will be held at the Painted DesertVisitorCenterCommunityBuilding in Petrified ForestNational Park. This lecture is open to the public, admission is free, and is presented in conjunction with the park’s observance of Arizona Archaeology and Heritage Awareness Month. The Petrified Forest National Park Learning Center was established to bring park visitors and researchers together to foster understanding and appreciation of the natural and cultural resources of the park and the Colorado Plateau. Lectures are held the first Wednesday of each month on a variety of topics including geology, paleontology, archeology, and biology.
