Decrease in Visitation for July 2006 at Petrified Forest National Park Petrified Forest, AZ - Park Superintendent Lee Baiza announced the visitation for July was down by 4% from last year with 91,279 visits compared to last year’s 95,012. The year-to-date total is 372,321 which is down by 1% from last year. In the early 1960’s, architects Richard Neutra and Robert Alexander envisioned their design of the Painted Desert Visitor Center as an “oasis in the desert”. In keeping with that theme the visitor center plaza featured a reflecting pool which was removed some years later. Recently the pool has been restored and visitors may again enjoy the sight and sounds of water at the “oasis”.
