Petrified Forest—On Saturday, May 14th, 2011 Petrified Forest National Park would like to invite the public to join in discovering and enjoying our migratory birds. International Migratory Bird Day was created to focus attention on one of the most important and spectacular events in the life of a migratory bird—its journey between its summer and winter homes. Go Wild, Go Birding! is this year’s theme, chosen to highlight our focus on reaching out to involve new youth and adults in learning about birds, birdwatching, and bird conservation. Today, International Migratory Bird Day is celebrated in Canada, the U.S., Mexico and Central America through bird festivals and bird walks, education programs, and Bird Day! 7:30 am and 6 pm Ranger Guided Program—Bird Discovery Program: find out what species of birds live along the Puerco River. Meet at the Puerco Pueblo parking lot. This is off-trail: wear appropriate shoes, use sun protection, bring plenty of water. You should also bring anything you usually use during birdwatching such as life lists and binoculars. All Day Self Guided Activity—Bird Count Drawing: Good at birding? How many species can you find? Ask at any of the park information desks for a bird count form and enter the drawing for a prize. 10 am Ranger Guided Activity Painted Desert Visitor Center Plaza—Backyard Birding for Kids: You can’t start too young for enjoying birds—a family friendly program! Free Handouts:Celebrate International Migratory Bird Day by picking up word searches, crossword puzzles, coloring pages, or brochures about the birds of Petrified Forest National Park, available at any of the visitor center information desks as well as at the park website https://www.nps.gov/pefo.
