Petrified Forest National Park Celebrates Arizona Archaeology and Heritage Awareness Month, March 2008

Petrified Forest - “Share Our Dirt” is the theme for Arizona Archeology and Heritage Awareness Month. At Petrified Forest National Park you can share our dirt by: seeing cultural demonstrators make clay pottery and carve stone fetishes, get down in the dirt at a ranger program about archeology, get the dirt from exhibits, play in the dirt with hands-on events, and discover the dirt through self-guided activities. Programs for Archeology Month will include tours of the Painted Desert Inn National Historic Landmark and Puerco Pueblo and exploring the archeology of Route 66. Come celebrate AZ Archeology and Heritage Awareness Month at Petrified Forest National Park and the Archaeology Expo!

Arizona Archeology and Heritage Awareness Month celebrates the state’s rich history, but also reminds us of the fragile nature of archeological clues. During March, learn about Arizona’s amazing past and discover your part in protecting Arizona’s, and the nation’s, irreplaceable heritage. For more information call (928) 524-6228 weekdays, 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Mountain Standard Time (outside of Arizona—except for the Navajo Nation—Daylight Savings starts on March 9, 2008); or write to the Superintendent, Petrified Forest National Park, P.O. Box 2217, Petrified Forest, AZ 86028; or e-mail the park.
