Contact: Marge Post, (928) 524-6228 ext.264 Art and Essay Contest Winners Announced Petrified Forest, AZ -- Congratulations to the winners of the first annual Art and Essay Contest at Petrified Forest National Park. Over fifty entries were received from Grades 3 and 4 at Hulet Elementary and Grade 5 at Hopi Day School. ART (Grades 3-5) ESSAY (Grades 3-5) The 1st and 2nd place winners will receive, respectively, $50 and $25 Petrified Forest Museum Association gift certificates. Because it was such a close contest, Honorable Mentions will also be awarded a prize! Special thanks to the teachers who encouraged their students to submit an entry: Mrs. Sue Wischmann, Mrs. Julie Wiessner, and Mrs. Esther Stant from Hulet and Mr. Crujido from Hopi Day School. All contestants and their families, and the teachers mentioned above, are invited to attend a reception in their honor at Painted Desert Inn from 10:00–11:00am on Saturday, December 9. Awards will be presented and refreshments served. The public is also invited to attend! The Art and Essay Contest was held as part of the 100th anniversary celebrations at Petrified Forest National Park. Designated a national monument on December 8, 1906 and upgraded to national park on December 9, 1962, the park celebrates 100 years of protection in 2006. All artwork and essays submitted for the contest will be on display at Painted Desert Inn through the month of December.
