Annual Fee Free Day

Petrified Forest, AZ – September 30, 2006 has been declared a “fee free” day announced Superintendent Lee Baiza. No entrance fees will be collected on that day in celebration of the National Public Lands Day. In years past, the National Park Service waived fees on August 25, Founder’s Day. To increase consistency across all Federal recreation programs, Interior bureaus and the USDA Forest Service, National Public Lands Day has now been designated as the single Fee-Free Day for these agencies.

As a part of National Public Lands Day, thousands of Americans will take part in hundreds of volunteer activities around the country designed to improve and preserve our nation’s natural and cultural heritage. At Petrified Forest, volunteers are needed to remove metal pins used to stabilize matting for a revegetation project along the Long Logs Trail, and volunteers are needed to build protection cages for plants being planted as part of the landscaping at the Painted Desert Inn. Anyone wishing to assist with this project may call the park to make arrangements to do so. The National Park Service is proud to take part in this coordinated Federal recreation effort and would like to extend a warm welcome to all visitors in recognition of National Public Lands Day.

For information call (928) 524-6228 weekdays, 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Mountain Standard Time; or write to the Superintendent, Petrified Forest National Park, P.O. Box 2217, Petrified Forest, AZ 86028; or e-mail the park.
