Sunrise Run/Walk to be Held at Petrified Forest National Park

Petrified Forest, AZ – Petrified Forest National Park is hosting a 5K/10K “Sunrise Run/Walk” on August 11, 2006 at 5:30 a.m. “The Petrified Forest Museum Association is sponsoring the event in celebration of the park’s 100th anniversary,” stated Superintendent Lee Baiza.

This event will offer participants a rare opportunity to enjoy the park at sunrise, before the regular opening hours of the park. The run will follow the section of park road that passes by the Painted Desert. The beautiful colors of the Painted Desert come alive in the early morning hours and temperatures are cooler at that time.

Participants may register in advance by downloading and printing out the registration form and mailing the form to Petrified Forest Museum Association, Attention: Sunrise Run/Walk, P.O. Box 2277, Petrified Forest National Park, AZ 86028. The registration fee is $15 up to July 31, 2006 and $20 after that. Registration includes a t-shirt, and a ticket for a drawing for items donated by Petrified Forest Museum Association, including a Petrified Forest National Park serigraph.

Only registered participants of the Sunrise Run/Walk will be permitted into the park before regular business hours. Late registration and sign-in will begin at 4:30 a.m. at the entrance gate to the park at I-40 exit 311. The run/walk will start at 5:30 a.m.

The event is a collaborative effort by Petrified Forest Museum Association, Petrified Forest National Park, Arizona Department of Public Safety, and Puerco Valley Fire and EMS.
