“This project has been in the funding pipeline for quite some time, so we are glad to see it finally moving ahead,” Superintendent Eric Brunnemann said. “The building has been in continuous use for over 20 years. Most problems are wear-and-tear and outdated design. For example, when the showers were built, they were designed without proper ventilation. As a result, during the summer, temperatures in the showers are hotter than the outside temperature. The redesign and repair of the facility will make it safer, more comfortable, and ultimately provide visitors with a better experience.”
In addition to replacing the ventilation system, floor, and plumbing, the contract includes the replacement of showers and stalls, bringing the handicap accessible showers up to standard and properly framing walls to withstand hurricane force winds.
The shower facilities at the Malaquite Visitor Center will be closed for the duration of the repairs and the restroom facilities may be periodically closed. The vault toilets and outdoor showers will be available for use at the North end of the visitor center parking lot.
According to the NPS Contracting Office in Santa Fe, New Mexico, the contract work is expected to start September 13, 2021. Provided no issues arise during the work period, the contractor should conclude work in mid-December.
