Road Construction and Detours

Project Details: This project will replace the current temporary barrier with a permanent safety barrier, which has been designed to be more durable, effective and aesthetically pleasing. Construction services will also incorporate preventative maintenance, including repainting the bridge.
Timeframe: April 2026 - May 2027
Type of Impact: Closure
Notes: Visitors can access the north end of the parkway by driving from the Northern Terminus to Big Tree Overlook (MP 440) and back, for an in-and-out visit. Bicyclists planning long-distance day rides on the parkway should park at the Highway 96 off-ramp parking area and ride south of MP 437. For a shorter ride, park at the northernmost parking lot (MP 442) and ride to Big Tree Overlook (MP 440) and back.

Exit parkway at MP 437 (exit ramp is on the RIGHT)
Project Details: Repair work on the road has closed the Natchez Trace Parkway from milepost 180 to 204. Construction is anticipated to continue into 2026.
Timeframe: June 2025 - June 2026
Type of Impact: Closure
Notes: The road will be closed to all traffic, including vehicles, bicycles and pedestrians, as construction crews work to repair failing areas of the parkway. Travelers can expect about 15 minutes (10 miles) added to their drive. The closure is necessary to provide for safety of workers and visitors while the parkway undergoes full removal of failed sections of pavement and culverts.
Detour Directions (Northbound)
Turn right onto HWY 413 for approximately 7 miles.
Turn left onto HWY 12 W for approximately 7.75 miles.
Turn left onto HWY 9 for approximately 16 miles.
Continue straight at the junciton underneath Natchez Trace Parkway.
Exit right onto HWY 82 E for approximately 7.25 miles.
Exit right onto the ramp for Natchez Trace Parkway.
Turn right onto Natchez Trace Parkway.
Detour Directions (Southbound)
Turn left onto off ramp for HWY 82 W; exit off the first ramp.
Follow HWY 82 W for approximately 7.5 miles.
Exit right, then keep left onto HWY 9 S for approximately 16 miles.
Continue straight at the junction underneath the Natchez Trace Parkway.
Turn right onto HWY 12 E for approximately 7.75 miles.
Turn right onto HWY 413 for approximately 7 miles.
Turn left onto the Trace.
Water Status
MP 54. 8 - Rocky Springs Campground Water
The water at the Rocky Springs Campground Comfort Station is non-potable. Visitors may still use the facilities but should not drink the water.

MP 102.4 - Parkway Information Cabin
The Parkway Information Cabin in Ridgeland, MS is closed indefinitely. Visitors may still use the parking lot to access the Chisha Foka multi-use trail.
The historic home at Mount Locust is closed. Visitors may see the home from the outside still or walk the grounds.

MP 15.5 - Historic Inn & Stand at Mount Locust
The historic stand at Mount Locust Inn & Plantation is closed due to structural concerns. Visitors may still explore the grounds, see the exterior of the home, and stop by the Visitor Center.

MP 198.1 - Jeff Busby Campground Closed
Due to the ongoing construction work from mileposts 181-204, the Jeff Busby site is closed for day use and camping. The site will reopen when construction in the area concludes.

The Parkway Visitor Center near Tupelo, MS, is open 9am-4:30pm seven days a week. The visitor center is closed Thanksgiving, December 25th and January 1st.
