Morristown, NJ –  Dusk is when the bats come out! Nine species of bats call New Jersey home, and many can be seen flying around your neighborhood at dusk. To help you identify which species of bat you’re looking at, Morristown National Historical Park is offering two evening Bat Walk programs.

The first Bat Walk will be offered 7:30-9:30 pm on Friday August 9, 2019, and the second will be 6:30-8:30 pm, on Friday September 13, 2019. The programs are free, but registration is required. To register, please contact Bob Masson at  e-mail us or 908-766-6841.

On the Bat Walk, you’ll join staff from the Rutgers University Wildlife Conservation and Management Program to learn about the unique ecology of bats. You’ll watch them hunt insects using echolocation as the light fades, and learn how to use handheld acoustic detectors that can identify which bat species are flying nearby.

The walks will begin on the lawn near Jockey Hollow’s Wick Farm. As it gets dark, we will stroll around the Wick Orchard and adjacent trails to search for bats. All ages are welcome.

Please bring a headlamp or flashlight and wear good walking shoes. Tick repellent is recommended for outdoor activities. In case of inclement weather, the programs will be entirely indoors in the Jockey Hollow Visitor Center.
