MORRISTOWN, NJ -- Morristown National Historical Park (NHP) is pleased to announce the availability of its Draft Vegetation and White-tailed Deer Management Plan/Environmental Assessment and Assessment of Effect for public review and comment. The purpose of the plan is to address issues associated with 1) nonnative invasive plant species proliferation that prevents native tree regeneration; 2) the effects of white-tailed deer browsing on tree regeneration; and 3) the loss of key aspects of the park’s cultural landscape.

The National Park Service originally proposed developing an environmental impact statement (EIS) in 2010. The information gathered during formal scoping period in 2011 was used by planners to refine alternatives and work through impact analysis on natural and cultural resources for the development of a Vegetation and White-tailed Deer Management Plan. After careful analysis and consideration, the NPS has changed the environmental compliance pathway from an EIS to an environmental assessment (EA).

Participation of the community has been an important part of developing this plan. We now request your thoughtful evaluation and comments on the proposed alternatives. The 30-day public comment period for review of the Draft Vegetation and White-tailed Deer Management Plan/EA is open now through September 8, 2017. Interested parties may obtain an electronic version of the draft plan and/or submit electronic comments through the Planning, Environment and Public Comment (PEPC) website at: https://parkplanning.nps.gov/projectHome.cfm?parkId=256&projectID=33415.
Submitting comments through the PEPC website is the best method.

Written comments on the draft plan may also be sent to: Robert Masson, Chief of Natural Resources, Morristown NHP, 30 Washington Place, Morristown, New Jersey 07960.

Two public meetings will be held in August 2017 to discuss and solicit your input on the draft plan. Please join us on Wednesday, August 23rd from 7-9 pm, or Thursday, August 24th from 2-4 pm at the park’s Washington's Headquarters Museum Auditorium, 30 Washington Place, Morristown New Jersey 07960.

For further information please contact Robert Masson at the above address, or email him at e-mail us.

Morristown National Historical Park preserves, protects, and commemorates the landscapes, structures, features, and museum collections of the Continental Army winter encampments, the headquarters of General George Washington, and related Revolutionary War sites at Morristown, New Jersey for the benefit and inspiration of the public. Morristown NHP also represents a continuum of our nation’s efforts to protect our common heritage: as the very first “national historical park”, the park was also established to commemorate, preserve, and memorialize American history and heritage. Morristown NHP is the primary NPS site in the Crossroads of the American Revolution National Heritage Area (http://revolutionarynj.org/). Established by the U.S. Congress in 2006, the Crossroads promotes a greater understanding of Revolutionary-era historical sites and landscapes in New Jersey.
